Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) / Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education

At Gravel Hill, our PSHE curriculum strives to give pupils the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and to prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. Our PSHE curriculum is delivered using the KAPOW scheme of work, alongside the My Happy Mind programme, which supports children’s mental health and emotional wellbeing. Together, these approaches bring learning to life and ensure a balanced focus on healthy relationships, social responsibility and personal wellbeing, whilst promoting fundamental British values.
We cover three core themes throughout the school year, focusing on different topics each term. Our approach allows the whole school to focus on similar themes at the same time, enabling us to promote PSHE collectively through assemblies and whole-school incentives. This structure also allows children to revisit and build on their knowledge and skills year on year.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Our PSHE curriculum covers all of the statutory requirements for RSE within each year group. Effective Relationships & Sex Education (RSE) is crucial to developing and maintaining emotional and physical health. Our curriculum is designed to ensure pupils receive their sex education in the wider context of relationships, and are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

We also support the children to develop a range of appropriate personal skills to keep themselves healthy and safe, particularly within different relationships.

Throughout their time at Gravel Hill,  the children spend time developing an understanding of a range of values and moral issues including the importance of family life.  Children are taught biological facts related to human growth and development, including reproduction and the importance of healthy relationships.

We believe that the teaching of sex education should be complementary and supportive to the role of parents. The link below will take you to our Parent Workshop/Consultation presentation.
